Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet structure, and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more precise, sharper and less cloned previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live show that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group embarked on an extensive world tour to promote it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then and Now in 2001. It was the band's first album without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities.
